Astrology

Astrology is a very old science based on constellations, mathematics, mythology and philosophy. There are twelve astrology signs. Each sign is associated with an element (fire, earth, air & water), is ruled by a planet and has it's own place in your birth chart.

People have different reactions when talking about the subject. Some think it’s all about trying to pigeon hole people into a set kind of personal characteristics. Others think it’s a bunch of crap. Still others want you to predict if they are going to win the lottery, get married in the next six months or tell them how many children they’re going to have. I’ve been studying astrology for over 25 years, and I’m going to tell you how I utilize it in my life and how I think it may be helpful in yours.

And why would I even bring up astrology on a self-help site? I like to use astrology as a tool for personal discovery and development. I believe that astrology has many things to offer people but one of the ways I like to use it most is as a mirror. When we look at ourselves in the mirror we see things we like about ourselves, things we dislike and things we’d like to change. I look at a person’s sun sign and their birth chart as similar tools. We look at the personality traits of your sun sign and say one of the following:

Yes. I recognize that and I like that; or
No. That’s not like me at all; or
Well, Yeah. That’s me, I’d be great if I could avoid that tendency.

Every year the constellations are just a bit different so if you are born on the cusp of a sun sign (i.e. June 20), you may need to check with an ephemeris or go to your local astrologer to find out your sign. Below are some basic traits associated with each sign, for more information click on the link associated with the sign. So take a look in your astrology mirror and see how the following traits apply to you:

I also like to remind people that in every astrological tradition, you are not JUST your sun sign. Actually your sun sign can be just a small part of you, like your hair color and depending on the other aspects in your chart can be more or less obvious in the way your perceive yourself.

Your Astrology Birth Chart

Your astrology chart is comprised of 12 signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces), 12 houses, ten planets, 4 elements and 3 qualities.  At the time of your birth, the stars were in a particular place and their placement makes up your birth chart.  As I said before, the way I look at a birth chart is it shows potentials and weaknesses that you can and may develop at your choosing.  I believe we all have free will to use our strengths and overcome our weaknesses, it is simply a matter of choice.  The more knowledge you have about your potentials; the better choices you make.  Your birth chart tells your rising sign, where all your planets (including your sun sign are located), whether you tend towards being extraverted or introverted and many other possibilities.  For more in depth information on reading your birth chart click on the link above.
