Astrology Chart

Your astrology chart is comprised of 12 signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces), 12 houses, ten planets, 4 elements and 3 qualities.  When you were born the constellations in the sky were in certain positions.  Your birth cart records these positions and astrologers can read the planets and their positions, signs and relationships to each other to give you an idea of your personality, potentials and challenges that you may face in life.  Metaphorically, through astrology during our lives, we move through all the houses touch on all the elements, ideals and relationships that make up life.  The sign on the cusp of the first house is your rising sign.  I like to think of everything inside the circle (all the houses, planets, aspects, etc. as portions of who we are, potentials and challenges that are within us, as well as lessons to be learned.  All these things reach the outside world through our rising sign.  Just as everything inside us has to be communicated to the world through our bodies.

THE HOUSES

There are ten major planets that make up our astrology chart.  Where they were positioned when we were born is detailed in your birth chart (i.e. which houses your planets are positioned.).  Houses 1-6 below the middle horizontal line are thought of as inner houses (their lessons may be more personal in nature and if most of your planets are in these houses, you may tend to be more of an introverted person.  Houses 7-12 are thought of as more outwardly focused and if most of your planets are located in these houses, we would say you are more likely to be an extraverted person.

THE PLANETS

The ten planets are as follows:

The first six planets (The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter) are called “personal planets” and are said to affect your personality more directly than the remaining four outer planets (Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto).

The Sun.  This is the sign that is commonly referred to as YOUR sign.  My sun sign is in Aries, thus most people say I’m an Aries but your sun sign, while important is far from all of who you are.  Your sun sign most accurately describes who you feel that you are on the inside and the house where your sun sign lives will often point to things that are important to you and where you would like to shine in your life.

The Moon.  The moon describes how you experience feelings and emotions.  The sign that your moon is in when you are born shows how you experience emotions.  The house where your moon is placed in your birth chart describes the area of life where you may experience most of your emotional ups and downs in life.

Mercury.  Mercury describes your thought processes.  The sun sign that Mercury is in describes the ways your think and communicate (i.e. Mercury in Aries might be a quick thinker, whereas mercury in Capricorn would be focused on rational processes).  The house where you find mercury shows where and how you communicate best.

Venus.  Venus describes how your love and the kind of romantic partner for which you are looking.  The sign and the house give us clues as to the personality traits that you are attracted to.  The house where you find Venus shows what you really enjoy.

Mars.  Mars describes your physical actions.  The sign that Mars is in tells what kind of energy you possess, your sexual appetites and how you express them.  The house where you find Mars shows where you expend the greatest amount of your energy in life.

Jupiter.  Jupiter is the planet of luck and expansion.  The sign and house where we find Jupiter in shows the ways and places where you may find good fortune and where you like to spend your leisure time or what activities you engage in when you have leisure time.

When looking at the four remaining planets, we mostly focus on the houses that they are in because the planets move so slowly that the sign they are in is shared with many people.

Saturn.  Saturn is the astrological teacher and as such the house that it’s in tells you where you feel least secure and the areas where you may experience lessons and growth.

Uranus.  Uranus is the awakener.  It points to invention and originality.  The house where you find Uranus in your birth chart shows the area where you are most likely to do the unusual.

Neptune.  Neptune shows spiritual and escapist urges.  The house where you find Neptune is where you will seek the ideal but also where you may end up deceiving yourself and/or others.

Pluto.  Pluto is the planet of transformation.  The house where you find Pluto is often the area where you will find complexities in your life and where you may have to face and conquer challenges alone and unaided.
